Juventus leading race for Chelsea's Frank Lampard

December 02, 2012

Lampard, who has less than seven months left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, has already been told by interim manager Rafa Benitez that he will not be offered an extension.

And the England midfielder's advisers have had it suggested to them that Juventus could be an option after the club made it clear they still rate the player.

The news of Lampard's departure has been expected for a while, and he is said to have been on the lookout for a new challenge since the start of last season. Then, Lampard was rumoured to be mulling over a switch north to Manchester United, which never ultimately came to fruition after Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich refused to sanction the transfer.

The 34-year-old is still a man in demand, though, despite United now cooling their interest - and a move abroad when his deal expires at the end of this season now look increasingly likely. MLS outfits LA Galaxy and New York Red Bulls have both been in touch and made the England midfielder lucrative offers but, according to Corriere Dello Sport, Juventus are the front runners.

A switch to Italy would allow Lampard to remain at a competitive level and still feature in the Champions League, at a club that has helped rejuvenate the fortunes of many ageing players in recent years.

Lampard would be free to negotiate a pre-contract move in the January transfer window, although the ex-West Ham man is still keen to finish the season in the Premier League.
