Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp claimed his team are well set up for the rest of the season after going into the winter break in third place.
The champions' 3-1 win at struggling Hoffenheim ensured they would end the year 12 points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.
"We are there in the leading group," Klopp said on the club's website. "This is a good basis for the rest of the season.
"The team played a very successful first round of the campaign.
"(At his stage) last year we had 34 points in the league and four in the Champions League. Now it's 30 domestically, but 14 in Europe."
Dortmund topped a Champions League group containing Real Madrid, Manchester City and Ajax.
The club have also amassed 77 league points in the calendar year, the highest in their history, and are so far unbeaten in the DFB-Pokal in 2012.
"People will probably still be talking about this year in 50 years' time," chief executive Hans Joachim Watzke said.
