Jan Vertonghen believes Tottenham target Christian Eriksen has the quality to shine in the Premier League as the club weigh up their plans for next month’s transfer window.
Vertonghen and Eriksen were team-mates at Ajax from 2010 until last summer, when the Belgian defender left Amsterdam to move to White Hart Lane. Eriksen’s contract at Ajax runs out at the end of next season and the Danish playmaker has indicated that he is unlikely to sign a new one.
There will probably be substantial interest from many clubs in Eriksen but Vertonghen knows him well enough to be confident about the 20-year-old’s prospects were he to make the switch to the English game.
“Technically, he’s one of the best players I’ve played with,” said Vertonghen, who scored the only goal against Swansea yesterday to push Tottenham back to fourth in the table. “He can use his right foot and his left foot equally well and he is always fit.
“Since he was 17 or 18 he has played so many games for Ajax and hardly ever been injured. When he gains a bit more physical strength, then I think he can play in any team.
“I don’t want to speak for him but he is a good player, and I think a good player can play here.”
