Lionel Messi is just one goal away from Gerd Müller's 1972 record of 85 goals in 60 games. Forty years on, the Argentine who is now on 84 for the year, could equal or beat this figure in an inconsequential Champions League match against Benfica, for which he's been called up.
'Torpedo' Müller is still the all-time leading scorer in the Bundesliga with 365 goals, and for Germany with 68. He was with playing for Bayern Munich when he notched up the calendar year record.
If Messi beats him, he will have taken longer to do it; at the moment he's played 64 matches in the year, four more than the German.
In 2012, the Barça number '10' scored five past Leverkusen in the last sixteen of the Champions League, four against Espanyol and Valencia in the Liga along with six hat-tricks and a whopping 16 braces.
In his record year, Müller also scored five against Rot-Weiss in the Bundesliga, and another five against Omonia Nicosia in the European Cup. Along with those he put four past the USSR, Hannover and Switzerland, and bagged five hat-tricks and 12 doubles.
