Diego Simeone's name has been added to the list of managers Chelsea will turn to if Pep Guardiola snubs Stamford Bridge.
There is concern at Chelsea that Guardiola is going off the idea of joining the Blues.
Guardiola has put Manchester United top of his wishlist of clubs and is also a target for Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.
Rafa Benitez has the chance to prove he could take the Chelsea post permanently, but the club are also drawing up a list of alternatives. Jose Mourinho’s expected availability has been noted, while Atletico Madrid boss Simeone (above) has been added along with Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp.
Simeone, 42, has done a superb job with Atletico and helped the club to a stunning 4-1 Super Cup success over Chelsea at the end of August, having won last season’s Europa League.
Chelsea scouts have watched plenty of Atletico matches while tracking in-form striker Radamel Falcao, another target.
The Spaniards are now trying to extend Simeone’s contract.
Meanwhile, Branislav Ivanovic has a score to settle this morning – with the man who cost him the biggest day of his career.
