Dasayev: Maybe Casillas is tired

December 26, 2012

Legendary USSR goalkeeper Rinat Dasayev has spoken of his surprise at the omission of Real Madrid's Iker Casillas in the recent defeat to Málaga.

Dasayev, considered one of the best keepers in the world in the 1980s, admitted: "Of course it was a surprise. Casillas is a very good goalkeeper."

The 55-year-old suggested that the Spain international was "maybe a bit tired after playing so many club and international games in the past few seasons" and added: "The Spanish league, the Champions League, the World Cup, the European Championships - that's a lot of tournaments."

A fixture in goal for the Soviet Union between 1979 and 1990, Dasayev asserted that at no point in his career did he experience anything similar to the situation between Casillas and Madrid coach José Mourinho.

The Soviet keeper appeared at three World Cups, was a runner-up at the European Championships in 1988 and won a bronze medal at the Moscow Olympics in 1980.

He spent almost his entire career at Spartak Moscow (1977-88), winning five league titles and being named his country's best goalkeeper on five occasions. He then finished his career with a three-year spell in Spain with Sevilla, retiring in 1991.
