Confidence boost key to Torres' improved form

December 25, 2012

Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez claims Fernando Torres' resurgent form is a result of an increase in confidence.

The Spain striker scored his seventh goal in six games at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and almost two years since his record-breaking move from Liverpool, he is finally starting to score the number of goals to justify his £50m price tag.

The arrival of Benitez, the man who brought Torres to England, has sparked a revival in the hugely criticised Spaniard, something the Chelsea boss claims is all down to confidence.

Benitez said: "He's a striker. He needed to score goals. The team is doing well, he's having more chances, and he has more confidence as a result."

Along with Torres, midfielder Frank Lampard also added to the 8-0 tally that saw Chelsea crush Aston Villa on Sunday, marking his 500th league start with a goal, and making him the club's all-time record league goalscorer.

Benitez added: "He's an important player for us. He's training well, doing well, his commitment is there. I'm really pleased for him scoring another goal, so everything is positive.

"We still have a long season to play, but he's doing well.

"The squad that we have is a good squad and we have to keep the balance. We have lost Oriol (Romeu), so we have managed with David Luiz in the middle, but we are managing the squad as best we can. If we can, it'll be easier."
