Chelsea to give Sturridge £1.5m handshake

December 24, 2012

Daniel Sturridge will get an amazing £1.5m golden handshake from Chelsea before joining Liverpool.

England striker Sturridge is entitled to the kiss-off as part of his contract which expires in 2014.

Sturridge underwent a medical at Liverpool yesterday (Sunday) and is set to move to Anfield at the second attempt after a proposed move on deadline day in August fell through.

Sturridge has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea are willing sellers as they look to shake-up their squad.

That left Sturridge and his advisers determined to get the contract paid up otherwise he could have sat tight for another 18 months.

Liverpool finally agreed terms with Sturridge, after they overcame problems surrounding the player’s demands during contract negotiations.

The deal was in doubt because of what the Reds saw as excessive stipulations from the striker’s agents, with Liverpool determined to cut down on their fees to players’ representatives after spending a staggering £32million on them in the past four years.

Yet talks have progressed to the extent that Sturridge was able to have a medical on Merseyside yesterday, clearing the way for his £12million transfer to be completed on January 1, allowing Sturridge to train with the Reds and go straight into the squad for the game against Sunderland on January 2.

The 23-year-old is thought to be ready to take a pay cut to move to Anfield, but the club will not comment on the deal until officially sanctioned by the Premier League and FA when the window opens.
