Barcelona rack up 103 points in 2012

December 26, 2012

Numbers don't lie, and there is no doubt Barcelona has been the best team in 2012. The 'Azulgranas' may not have captured the league title, but they have earned some 103 points this calendar year, equalling the mark they set in 2010. On the other hand, Real Madrid, last year's league champion, lies some way off the pace, having picked up 93 points.

The start overseen by Tito Vilanova this campaign has been nothing short of remarkable. Barça is sitting pretty at the top of the table, on 49 points, having matched its goalscoring figures from 1950-51, with 57 goals.

The 'Azulgranas' still have two games left – against Espanyol and Málaga – to further raise the bar before the first half of the season officially comes to a close. If the Catalans come away with three points on both occasions, they will reach the league halfway mark with 55 points, putting them firmly on course to smash the record 100-point tally set by Real Madrid last season.

Leo Messi, meanwhile, has the chance to equal his personal record for consecutive league matches on the scoresheet, having scored in his last seven 'La Liga' fixtures (against Mallorca, Zaragoza, Levante, Athletic Bilbao, Betis, Atlético de Madrid and Valladolid). If he notches on 6th January against Espanyol, he will draw level with his 8-game goalscoring streak from last season (spanning matchweeks 27 to 34). Presuming he achieves this feat, he will be behind only Martín and Ronaldo, who both previously scored for 10 games running.
