Fernando Torres will be handed a route to Russia if Rafa Benitez fails to save his Chelsea career.
Anzhi Makhachkala are pushing to take the Spanish striker out of the Premier League pressure cooker.
Manager Guus Hiddink has a good relationship with Roman Abramovich and the pair are understood to have discussed the difficult situation Torres has encountered at Stamford Bridge.
And the mega-rich Russians are the only club willing to pay Chelsea a fee that comes anywhere close to the £50million they paid Liverpool for him.
Abramovich is hoping Benitez will prove to be the man to get the best out of Torres – but if it does not work out Anzhi are now favourites to sign him.
The club already have a big-name front man in Samuel Eto’o and Hiddink is planning to step down as manager at the end of the season.
That does not impact on a potential Torres transfer, though, as Brazilian Roberto Carlos – Anzhi’s sporting director – is also backing the push to get Torres on board.
The player is still trying to prove he can hit the net regularly at Stamford Bridge. But time is running out as his goalscoring record since arriving two years ago is appalling.
The Russians will not be able to promise him Champions League football – but they hope that the massive wages they can offer will turn his head.
A source close to Torres said that he was determined to save his Chelsea career, adding: “Nobody from Chelsea has told him he will be sold but but it’s normal that the club are not satisfied with his perfomances.
“But the person affected most by all this is the player. Nando is conscious that he is not offering his best level.”
