Sacking managers costs Abramovich nearly £70m

ROBERTO DI MATTEO’S sacking takes Roman Abramovich’s pay-offs to axed managers up to nearly £70million. 

And that does not include the millions Abramovich shelled out to snatch Andre Villas-Boas from Porto in 2011 — only to dismiss him months later. 

Di Matteo will not receive as big a pay-off as some of the other managers during the Abramovich years. 

But it is believed he will be paid the remaining 18 months of his two-year contract — about £5m. 

Red Rom’s first sacked coach, Claudio Ranieri, had to haggle over his £6m pay-off. 

But Jose Mourinho and his backroom team walked away with a bumper sum, thought to be £18million.

Chelsea’s accounts confirm the club paid £23.1m in the 2007-8 season to get rid of Mourinho AND his successor Avram Grant. 

Luiz Felipe Scolari and his staff left Stamford Bridge with £12.6m according to the figures for 2008-9. 

And it cost £28m to fire Carlo Ancelotti and his assistant and then to hire Team Villas-Boas. 

Villas-Boas’ contract at Porto specified a £13.3m release clause but Chelsea’s 2010-11 accounts say £21.4m of the £28m went in wages and salaries. 

That meant pay-offs for Ancelotti, Ray Wilkins and other backroom staff booted out over the year. 

Chelsea stunned football earlier this month by revealing a £1.4m profit for last season. 

But until the full accounts for 2011-12 are published, the true cost of Villas-Boas’ rise and fall will not be known for sure. 

It is thought that instead of paying a lump sum, Chelsea continued paying AVB’s £100,000-per-week wages but only until he accepted a new job. 

AVB took the manager’s job at Spurs in July so Chelsea could have paid him £1.5m from the time of his sacking in March. 

If so, the Blues could have saved more than £10m in compensation.
