Liverpool and Stoke battle for Lazio striker

November 24, 2012

Lazio are having buyer’s blues after dishing out around €20 million for Mauro Zarate in 2009. The Argentine had a really successful loan spell with the Biancazzurri, where he led them in a successful Coppa Italia campaign. However, the 25 year old has failed to regain that form since, and rumours in the Italian media are circulating that the former Birmingham City player could be on his way out of the club this winter.

Liverpool and Stoke City are reportedly willing to spend no more than €7 million on the player, which is being deemed low by Lazio for a player of Zarate’s calibre. A couple of seasons ago the Reds were ready to offer €17 million to pair up the Argentine with Fernando Torres but clearly two sub-par seasons have witnessed a real drop in the player’s valuation.

Lazio has also received an offer from Genoa but it seems that Zarate has set his heart on a return to the Premier League or a move to La Liga and hence, one would expect both Stoke and Liverpool to be right up there amongst the favourites to sign the player.

Liverpool and Stoke City though would do a lot better in considering a player who has a proven track record rather than fixating their hopes on the potential of a player.
