Rennes have taken the decision to exclude Yann M’Vila and Chris Mavinga from their squad to face Montpellier this weekend, after the duo joined Antoine Griezmann (Real Sociedad), M’Baye Niang (AC Milan) and Wissam Ben Yedder (Toulouse) on a night out in Paris on the eve of their European Championship qualifier with Norway.
France Under-21’s went on to lose 5-3, thus ending their hopes of qualification and on Friday Rennes revealed that action had been taken by the club.
"The decision to remove Chris Mavinga and Yann M'Vila from the professional squad is delicate… Rennes can no longer tolerate irresponsible behavior from certain players," read an official club statement.
"It's a strong decision which is shared by the directors of the club, despite the sporting consequences." The club's general manager Pierre Dreossi also plans to meet with his players on Friday to hear an answer for their behaviour.
“This can't be tolerated,” said Dreossi. “We mustn't let this go. We will meet to get an honest explanation, because this is a lack of respect for football, the team, and Rennes.”
Noel Le Graet, the French Football President, has confirmed to French radio station RMC than an investigation is underway about the incident.
While former Lens and Auxerre coach Guy Roux has been particularly damning in his response to the situation. When asked about their behaviour he responded: “Not stupid, just b*****ds.”
He added: “It's a total disgrace, they slammed all the values, values of the games togetherness and patriotism.”
