A women's football match in the United States showcased how violent the female game can be when one player was caught on camera kneeing another in the face - while she lay on the floor.
Those who think the women’s game is just a bunch of girls prancing around trying not to get hit by the ball or getting their newly manicured fingernails dirty might think again after seeing this video from a high school match, which involved a bit more than ‘handbags’.
Petiola Manu’s brutal and unprovoked attack on opponent Makenzie Clark during a recent match between East High and Woods Cross was picked up by local news channels in Utah.
‘[I'm] grateful she didn’t hit her in the temple, that she didn’t break her jaw,’ said Clark’s mother Susie.
‘I mean, there were so many other things that could have gone wrong that were really, really lucky Makenzie was OK. I’m not naive. I know that soccer is a rough sport.’
'Rough' might be a bit of an understatement in the circumstances, but give credit to Clark, who put her professional counterparts to shame by not even acknowledging the incident.
Offender Manu was left hanging her head in shame, though, saying: ‘I let my emotions get the best of me and I took it too far.
'And I just want to apologise to Makenzie Clark and everyone. I’m sorry.'
