Di Matteo happy with Torres' contribution

September 22, 2012

Roberto Di Matteo has rejected Ruud Gullit’s description of Fernando Torres as “not good enough” and claimed Chelsea have no plans to sign any more strikers.

Gullit, one of Di Matteo’s predecessors as Chelsea manager, said the current team often appear to be playing with only ten men, so miniscule is Torres’ contribution.

Di Matteo has precious few alternatives to £50m signing Torres because the club elected not to buy a striker over the summer.

Speaking after Wednesday’s Champions League draw against Juventus, Gullit said:

"For me he must do more. It is not good enough. He has had maybe one shot in the whole match, at times it is like Chelsea are playing with ten men. At the moment he is an enigma, he has to start performing – and quickly.”

Torres has scored two Premier League goals so far this season but his recent performances have been less impressive. The only other striker in Di Matteo’s squad, Daniel Sturridge, is injured and unavailable to face Stoke City on Saturday. The club have looked into signing several leading European forwards one of whom – Atletico Madrid’s Falcao – looked a class above Torres when scoring a brilliant hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Chelsea last month.

But Di Matteo said: “We’re happy with him. Even when he doesn’t score he either provides or works hard for the team. There are no issues for us. He’s always keeping defenders busy, moving and doing the right stuff. He’s full of confidence and he’s playing well and scoring goals. He hasn’t scored in the last couple [of games] but he’s scored before.
